An article in Friday’s Daily Press — and, probably, the reward mentioned inthe headline — has apparently led to the arrest of three men suspected in the murder of two Victorville gas station attendants.

Now, I love “Criminal” and “Sleep to Dream,” like pretty much everyone does, but one thing I never expected out of Fiona Apple was a cheerful and yet still good song. Damned if the title track off her new album, Extraordinary Machine, isn’t just that, though. It sounds like it could be the theme song for the hippest, coolest Disney cartoon ever:
I certainly haven’t been shopping for any new shoes,
And I certainly haven’t been spreading myself around.
I still only travel by foot and by foot it’s a slow climb,
But I’m good at being uncomfortable so I can’t stop changing all the time.
I noticed that my opponent is always on the go,
And won’t go slow so as not to focus and I notice
He’ll hitch a ride with any guide as long as they go fast from whence he came,
But he’s no good at being uncomfortable so he can’t stop staying exactly the same.
If there was a better way to go then it would find me.
I can’t help it, the road just rolls out behind me.
Be kind to me or treat me mean,
I’ll make the most of it, I’m an extraordinary machine.
Can’t you just picture a clockwork girl strolling down a road singing this, accompanied by her comic relief (say, a garden gnome)?
Good stuff, and even better than the first single off the album, “O’ Sailor,” as far as I’m concerned. And yes, the chipper spirit still has a bit of an edge. Of course it does.
Other fun stuff I’m listening to:
The next Lost podcast has been posted at the official ABC site.
You can stream it through their site or use podcasting software to snag it. iTunes is easily the most popular, but I like iPodder a lot more for the control it gives me over what to do with the file.
Both ABC and NPR (which has recently gotten into podcasting in a big way) are guilty of not really formating their MP3 files in a way nearly every other podcaster does, which would take them seconds more, if that, and would eliminate a minor annoyance with each. Go ahead and make the genre “Podcast,” guys, not “Fun & Games” or “News” or whatever. The fact that every other podcast does that — or close to it — means that people like me have their playlists set up to automagically include anything flagged as a podcast, without needing to futz with it beyond that. (In my case, it’s only unplayed podcasts, at that.)
In addition, I know that both ABC and NPR have logos and graphics they can slap onto their podcast. This isn’t some kid in their basement — the graphics already exist. Slap it onto the template for it and be done with it. You look less professional not doing it this way, when ABC, especially, is likely having someone with a $60,000 salary squirting out their podcasts each week.
(I actually have the same objection about Liz Phair‘s podcast, Uplands, but it sounds like she’s the one assembling it on her own while she’s on tour, so that merits a lot more slack.)
Anyway, back to the Lost podcast: This week’s includes Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly and Terry O’Quinn (Locke, the man) talking about their favorite season one moments, and the writers talking about last week’s episode along with talking up this week’s episode, “The Other 48 Days.”
It gives hints on where the Jack/Kate relationship is going, the intent of last week’s Shannon flashbacks, how they picked who would die, a big answer that doesn’t give away anything (yes, that stuff is all tied into the island’s Big Secret) and a bit more about the Black Rock that I hadn’t realized myself.
Check it out.
Jenn brought the two kittens over from the Ellis Truss yard to spend the weekend at our apartment. They’re allegedly there as mousers, but only one of them, Penny, shows any inclination towards hunting down and killing small animals.
The two sisters are, I think, about seven months old, and still very kittenish.
Penny shows her Siamese blood in her startling blue eyes, lack of fear of water and verbalization. She has markings like a snow leopard and six fingers on each paw, which look somewhat uncomfortable (that extra finger is just jammed in there), but she seems not to mind. She’s more reserved than her sister, although that’s not saying much.
Patch, a standard calico, although with Siamese facial features, personality and fearlessness towards water, is an absolute maniac, and she eggs on Penny when they’re together. (“Ooh, I bet we can get into the TV cabinet behind the DVD player!” “Oh, I bet we can get on top of the fish tank and stick our paws down through the opening for the filter and catch the fish that never actually swim to that spot!” “Hey, let’s do high-speed laps of the house for several hours, starting at 2 a.m.!”) I fully expect Patch to get into the liquor when we’re not looking, procure some cigarettes and sit up all night with Penny, calling boys long distance.
That said, when the two are separated, they’re both very sweet. If they eventually make their way into our home full-time, it won’t be a bad thing. But only if they knock it off with the 3 a.m. races.
- Update: The law has been laid down over at the truss yard. These are Ellis cats. Not a bad deal for two kittens, having too many people willing to offer them a home, is it?
Note to myself, since I’ve forgotten all my lesser symptoms the first time I got sick with this:
- Eyes like eggs being boiled in my sockets
- Phantom itchiness on lower legs
- Nausea
- Light-headedness
- General discomfort with clothes, bed linens, etc
- Tender spots on my calves, especially on the back
