Return of the ants

My previous victory over the ants appears to have been aided by the weather, because this week, the ants have returned, once again establishing an initial foothold in my bathroom. (Their point of access appears to be a hole in the sealant around the base of my toilet, which would make a kinder person feel they’ve suffered enough.)

I still have some of the insecticide powder our previous Orkin man gave me, but I’m out of the MaxForce anti-ant weaponry. I’m hesitant to lay down a lot of poison in places the kittens can (and will) get to, but I’m thinking of going full-force in my bathroom and leaving the door closed until all the ants are dead. If they make it to the kitchen again, it’s going to be more problematic dealing with them, since Hanna and Lucky seem determined to misbehave in there when we’re asleep or at work.

  1. We found several natural remedies on line – I will send them to you. In the meantime, they said that ants hate dryer sheets like Bounce. If you have some of those, lay them in the area. More and better ideas later.

  2. Our old Orkin man suggested Windex, and I found a like-new bottle that I guess dates to that time. I used it on every ant I saw overnight and haven’t seen a new wave reappear this morning. (I squirt and then close the bathroom, since I don’t want the kittens licking up any wet spots of Windex.) We’ll see how it goes.

  3. I’ve always been lucky with a (3) part strategy, (1) lay down combat discs, (2) spray a line of any spray along the baseboards in the affected area, and (3) physically squish every single ant you see. Theory for (3) other than the obvious is that if fewer ants return home from your direction, the scouts who went less lethal ways will eventually steer the throngs elsewhere.
