The die is cast
The grad school application has been sent. All that remains is the writing test before the 20th and crossing my fingers until sometime in April.

Whoa. So you’ve applied to Columbia? Kudos, Beau. Maybe I’ll have the guts to do the same someday soon. I too have been on one trajectory (environmental policy analysis/advocacy) with just my B.A. from U.Va. I swim every day with people with Ivy League PhDs, MSes, JDs, etc. under their belts. I have plenty of on-the-job training (Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, Zero Population Growth, a state environmental agency and now six years at NRDC), but I would LOVE to get more structured, disciplined training. BTW, I also didn’t know that you were a foreign service brat as well. I think that’s part of what keeps me from going back to grad school. I feel like it would require me to stay put for too long, and now that the energy and climate stream seems to be picking up speed it’s especially hard to face the possibility that the best way to contribute long-term is to step out of it to get that additional education.
