World of WarcraftStarting tonight at 9 p.m. Pacific Time, much of the gaming world will be going nuts, as the first expansion to World of Warcraft, The Burning Crusade, goes live.

How global and nutsy will the 8 million subscribers worldwide get? My 62-year-old father is lining up outside a Bay Area computer store at midnight to get one of the first copies and install it before dawn, so he can be one of the first bleary-eyed explorers to crash the server visit Outland.

Me? I’m taking Tuesday off and driving to Burbank to pick up one of the coveted Collector’s Editions. But hey, at least we know we’re nuts …

  1. Just so you know, I arrived at the closest Best Buy as they opened at 10am and was one of the first people waiting at the door. I walked in, grabbed a Collector’s Edition from the display they had set up, wandered toward the back to look for a DVD and by the time I made it back up to the checkout a couple minutes later, all the CE’s were gone (there were about 20). I understand they may have had more that they were holding for preorder folks, but that was it for the ones they had put out for the non-preorder crowd.

    Good luck on your quest!

  2. We just got back from the Burbank Fry’s. It opened at 8 a.m. and it was essentially a time-shifted midnight opening. All the CEs (probably about 50 of them) were gone within 35 minutes. It’s telling about WoW’s success that while there were plenty of d00ds in black with bad haircut and questionable choices in facial hair, there were also couples and perfectly ordinary people at Fry’s before 9 a.m. on a workday picking up a videogame. Every single customer in line in front of us at the checkout had either a regular copy, a CE, or both.

  3. When I swung into Target yesterday morning to pick up my copy, there were three of us in line – a fresh out of high school girl complete with black died hair, a guy wearing a football jersey and a soul patch you could hide a chicken in, and me – resplendent in my “Board of Directors” meeting outfit.
